Astelia banksii, or more commonly known as Coastal Astelia or Wharawhara.

This grass type shrub usually grows up to about 50cm tall, and 1m wide, so is perfect for your berm as is not too high to block drivers' view. 

​

This species has narrow, silvery green leaves, pale green flowers in the Spring, and purple berries in the autumn. 

​

The Wharawhara prefers full sun or partial shade, and good drainage. When planting, plant approximately 80cm apart to avoid over crowding. 

​

This plant is great for your berm as they are great habitats for insects and lizards, and food for native birds.
